Help shape the future shared path

Avoca Drive Shared Path, Avoca Beach

This stretch of road is one of the most trafficked corridors in the area, however lacks accessible facilities for pedestrians and cyclists in moving between recreational facilities, food and dining establishments and parks and open space and the shopping strip and beach.

Without a safe, dedicated space for people to walk or cycle, active transport is not suitable for the many families, elderly and general community who lead an active lifestyle and are seeking an alternate mode of transport.

What's being proposed?

In alignment with Council's current Active Transport Plans (Bike Plan and Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan), we are proposing to build a new 3 metre wide concrete shared path along Avoca Drive, from Scenic Highway to Heazlett Park.

Why it matters

This project is about prioritising safety, accessibility, connection and long-term resilience. Avoca Drive is a key link – not just for locals, but for the many visitor who travel to this beautiful part of the Coast every year.

A dedicated shared path will help ensure everyone can move through the area safely and comfortably – however they choose to get around. Now we want to hear from you.

What's included as part of the proposal?

To help ensure we are making the most of this opportunity, the proposed concept design also includes improvements to the existing drainage, the installation of new kerb and guttering where required, retaining works, landscaping, restoring road pavement and related traffic facility improvements to make this stretch of the road safer, more accessible and more resilient for years to come.

  • Safer access

A safer, accessible and dedicated route for everyone - Pedestrians, bike riders, mobility scooters, parents with prams and anyone else out and about.

  • Better drainage

Less likelihood of water pooling or damaging the road and surrounding properties.

  • Road improvements

Maintaining quality road infrastructure across the LGA.

Council undertook high level consultation from 28 November to 11 December 2016 on this project, including a number of others. The project was highly requested and a resolution was adopted at the Ordinary Council meeting of 22 February 2025 to consider the construction of an off-road cycleway along Avoca Drive in future Delivery Programs.

In addition to this, during the development of Council's Bike and PAMP, this project was identified as a key priority project by our community.

Council also previously attended the Avoca Beach Community Association General Meeting on Monday 17 March 2025 to discuss the proposed project.

Your feedback on the concept design will be used to refine and shape the detailed design of the project, which is used to construct the shared path.

Visit this page regularly were we will post updates about the project as it progresses. You can also stay tuned in to Council's social media and news.
